Community Schools: Reimagining Education for the Whole Child
Imagine a school that's more than just classrooms and textbooks—a place where students receive healthcare, families access job training, and the community unites to support learning in all its forms. This isn't some distant dream; it's becoming a reality through community schools, transforming education right here in Pasadena.
More Than Just Classrooms
Community schools operate like bustling community centers that happen to have classrooms. At Rose City High School, a typical day extends far beyond traditional academics. The school's senior community advocate and truancy prevention specialist begin their day by reviewing attendance records and walking the campus. They connect with students, building a foundation of trust to support them in their educational journeys. Throughout the day, they may make phone calls or home visits to better understand how they can advocate for families and help remove barriers to attendance.
As the school day progresses, students may take part in career and technical education programs or meet with tutoring partners. After school, many participate in organized sports, a program that was reintroduced after a 15-year hiatus.
A shining example of how community schools extend beyond traditional education is the partnership between Young & Healthy and USC's dental mobile clinic. This collaboration delivers comprehensive dental care directly to PUSD students. Later this month, Madison Elementary will host the mobile clinic, offering no-cost dental services to students who might otherwise lack access. This initiative not only addresses urgent health needs but also removes a barrier to learning, as dental issues can greatly affect a student’s ability to focus and attend school regularly.
This comprehensive approach creates a seamless integration of education, health services, and community engagement, all under one roof. By leveraging partnerships with local organizations and institutions, community schools ensure that students receive holistic support that goes far beyond the classroom.
Breaking Down Barriers to Learning
For many students, challenges outside the classroom can hinder learning. Community schools address these obstacles head-on, recognizing that a child's success depends on more than just what happens during school hours.
At Madison Elementary School, three distinct reading intervention programs operate in concert, and instructional leadership groups meet monthly to collaborate and track student progress. The school also runs a daily attendance incentive program to foster strong habits for success. These initiatives have been further strengthened by increased parent involvement, with participation in the English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC) nearly doubling compared to the previous school year.
The Four Cornerstone Commitments
At the heart of the community schools model are four guiding principles that shape every aspect of how these schools operate. These aren't just lofty ideals – they are practical, daily commitments that transform the educational experience.
First, community schools embrace strength-based practices, celebrating what students can do rather than focusing solely on areas for improvement. Second, they are committed to creating racially just and restorative school climates, fostering environments where every student feels valued and supported. Third, these schools prioritize culturally relevant instruction, ensuring that learning is connected to students' lives and experiences. Finally, shared decision-making is a cornerstone of the model, engaging administrators, teachers, parents, students, and community members in shaping the school's direction.
A powerful example of these commitments in action is the implementation of restorative practices across many Pasadena schools, thanks to a partnership with the Western Justice Center. This initiative, which aligns with the commitment to creating just and restorative school climates, introduces sharing circles in classrooms. These circles provide a space for students to express themselves, build empathy, and resolve conflicts constructively. By moving away from punitive disciplinary measures and towards restorative approaches, these schools are fostering a sense of community and mutual understanding among students and staff alike.
These four commitments – strength-based practices, just and restorative climates, culturally relevant instruction, and shared decision-making – work together to create schools that are deeply responsive to their communities and dedicated to the success and well-being of every student.
A New Approach to Family Engagement
Community schools redefine family engagement, evolving from the traditional model of occasional parent-teacher conferences into a more dynamic and continuous partnership. At Madison Elementary School, Principal Dr. Elisa Pérez seeks input from families and staff to cultivate a positive, welcoming school environment. Community-wide activities on campus engage families year-round, with event ideas generated authentically from conversations with families, students, and teachers. These conversations have led to Zumba classes on campus for parents and staff, a family harvest festival, and more.
This comprehensive approach to family engagement creates a two-way street of support and resources, recognizing that every family has something valuable to contribute to the educational process.
Equity in Action
In a country where a child's zip code often predicts their educational outcomes, community schools are a powerful force for equity. At Washington Elementary STEM Magnet School, honoring linguistic heritage takes center stage with school-wide Spanish language courses. Students also engage with the world around them through a hands-on environmental studies curriculum. This project-based learning approach allows students to tackle real environmental challenges in their own communities, empowering them as problem-solvers, teachers, and leaders.
Community schools also provide targeted support for English language learners and students with special needs, ensuring that these students receive the specialized attention they need to thrive. At the same time, they offer advanced learning opportunities to all students, regardless of their background, challenging the notion that advanced coursework is only for a select few.
A prime example of this commitment to advanced opportunities is the partnership between John Muir High School Early College Magnet and Pasadena City College. Through their dual enrollment program, students at John Muir have the opportunity to earn an Associate's degree concurrently with their high school diploma. This innovative program not only accelerates students' academic progress but also provides them with valuable college experience, potentially reducing the time and cost of their higher education journey. By bringing college-level courses directly to the high school campus, this partnership breaks down barriers to advanced education and opens up new pathways for students who might not otherwise have access to such opportunities.
Perhaps most importantly, community schools create a culture of high expectations coupled with high support for every learner. They operate on the fundamental belief that every child can succeed when given the right support and opportunities, and they work tirelessly to make that belief a reality.
From Vision to Reality in Pasadena
PUSD has been at the forefront of this educational revolution, embracing the community schools model with remarkable success. What started as a pilot program with four schools in 2019 has now grown to include ten community schools, touching the lives of thousands of students and families.
This rapid growth is a testament to the effectiveness of the community schools model in addressing local needs. As each new school adopts this model, we see ripple effects throughout the community. At John Muir High School Early College Magnet, for example, 30 teachers and staff are proud Muir graduates themselves, embodying the school's commitment to community and lifelong learning.
The Future of Education?
As we grapple with persistent achievement gaps and complex challenges facing our youth, community schools offer a beacon of hope. They show us what's possible when we reimagine schools not as isolated institutions, but as vibrant centers of community life and learning.
This model addresses the whole child, recognizing that academic success is intertwined with physical, social, and emotional well-being. By bringing together a wide range of services and supports under one roof, community schools can efficiently leverage community resources, avoiding duplication of services and ensuring that support is accessible and coordinated.
The impact of community schools reaches beyond individual students or even individual schools. As these schools become hubs of activity and resources, they spark a chain reaction, uplifting entire neighborhoods through their comprehensive approach. They become sources of community pride and catalysts for broader community development.
In Pasadena, we're not just talking about educational transformation – we're living it. With each new community school, we're one step closer to ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has the support they need to thrive. We're creating a world where every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential, where education is a communal responsibility and a source of community pride. After all, isn't that what education should be about?
