Foster Care Project Volunteer Opportunities

April 20, 2016

Hello Brian,

Thanks for looking at The Foster Care Project. We provide volunteers to agencies who work to support foster youth in different ways. I send out a monthly email blast outlining upcoming opportunities and if any of those ever appeal to you just contact me. I have pasted below 3 agencies where we could use volunteers. If you are interested in any of them just let me know. I then will refer you to a “point person” who is our coordinator with that agency. He or she would then contact you with more detailed information. You will also need to go through a background check with that agency. I would need your contact info. – full name, mailing address and phone number so i can add you to our volunteer data base too.

1.Learning Works Charter School in Pasadena is looking for volunteers to serve as tutors to help seniors complete schoolwork and graduate on time. Learning Works specializes in re-engaging those who have dropped out as well as other students the regular school system has left behind. Tutors are especially needed in the subjects of high-level math and science. Students will be working diligently from June 1st thru June 16th beginning at 9 am and up to midnight, at times, to complete their required coursework. Learning Works is looking for volunteers to sign up for two- or four-hour shifts during that timeframe, weekends included. Please help lend your expertise to graduate as many students as possible.

2. Caring Adults Needed for Stars Drop-in Centers Volunteers are needed to staff on-campus drop-in centers for PUSD high-school and middle-school foster youth during the lunch hour. This is an opportunity to make a real difference in the life of a young person without a long-term or extensive time commitment. We are also seeking game tables, TV/DVD equipment, video games/consoles, board games, and bookshelves for the rooms.

3. Aspires West Tutors are desperately needed for the Aspires West after-school program; math (general math, geometry, algebra 1 and 2) and English for elementary, middle and high school students. Tutor schedules are Monday through Thursday, 4 -7 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30-12:30 p.m. Aspires West, Pasadena (AWP) provides low-income students and parents with services and opportunities that provide the knowledge and fundamental skills for students’ success.

4. Birthday Club One more of our volunteer opportunities: If you don’t have much time but would like to provide a birthday gift for a foster child you could sign-up for our “Birthday Club” A child is assigned to you (you don’t meet with the child you are just given some details, age and what they might like etc. You then go out and buy and wrap a gift for them dropping it off at “All Saints Church, Pasadena. It can mean a lot for a child to get a gift on their birthday as it shows someone cares. During the Christmas season we do the same thing but through our “Angel Tree” project. This year about 800 children got a Christmas present.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, etc.

Thanks,

Jane Stockly (Foster Care Project)
